Hmmmm, Ring A Week-Really?! Rings That Come Apart

Hmmm, a ring a week, maybe we have been jaded by Ring A Day, maybe we are secretly thinking 'I want to make a ring, but really I want to be making something else! The following are some very clever ways of thinking outside of the ring:

Thomasin Durgin (BKA Metalriot) a faithful RADer, who created the Ring A Week group is "counting on RAW to keep me sane and striving for well-conceived and carefully executed work." Her latest work is a ring (RAW#3) but also stands on it's own as a small sculpture, but even better the center piece comes out and also functions as a scatter pin.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/metalriot/

Sylvie Jousset has made an interactive ring (RAW #4) out of silver and rubber with little nails or pins for the wearer or a friend to place in a design on the ring. It could double as a wire jig too!! The first thing that it reminded me of when I saw it was one of those pin squares where you press your hand or face and it makes an impression of it in pins.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/sjousset/with/5396046436/

And then talk about clever!! For her RAW Ring #4 Michelle Sallemi made this 'Minimalist Puzzle Box' ring. And the puzzle pieces don't just look cool in the box, they actually fit together!!  http://www.flickr.com/photos/foundbarretteproject/with/5390581113

Ring A Week

It's a new year, it's a whole new challenge. Fortunately, it's a only a Ring A Week, instead of a Ring A Day!! What a luxury.

Week 1 is 'The Little General.' A rectangular piece of copper drilled with different size holes, folded in 2 directions, opened up and soldered, then given a heat patina. Looks a bit like armor. See if you can guess which one it is!

Week 2 is 'Betelgeuse.' I started out with a series of copper bands with various holes drilled into them and inserted a tube setting in to one. Then I enameled it black, like the night sky, and set a faceted garnet into the tube, representing Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion.

Week 3 is 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers.' Fold formed and forged copper with some domes repoussed out to make room for pods from space that plan to take over the world. I think that maybe I watched too many horror movies as a child.
